Melinda DiMaio: Journal

November Needs a Song - November 12, 2012

I might learn to love November more if I assigned it a theme song. Working on it! Though I did just finish penning my holiday song for 2012.  Now comes the delicious fun of arranging and producing it! Plan to post it up here for free download soon. Watch for it! In all goodness, MellyDee

Design Finalized - February 17, 2010

OK, folks....finally - the design is finalized and disk is being manufactured. Busy now writing for the next project, as is the MellyD way! Thanks for all the support from those who cheered me on from the sidelines throughout this process. Love you all
love you all ;-)

Master is Done! - January 16, 2010

So, for those of you who are unfamiliar with mastering, it's the process that pulls together the collection of songs that have been recorded separately, attempts to bring out/enhance each song and ensure there is consistency between tracks. It's the time to focus on the album as a whole and make sure the CD is ready to press. I worked with Maria Triana at Sony music; she listened carefully and tweaked and detweaked - a process akin to a dental teeth cleaning!
Now, I'm knee deep in photos and artwork - getting all ready for the production people. Writing songs is so much easier than this part! Nevertheless, pushing forward!

The Manufacturing! - January 2, 2010

Happy New Year folks! Now that the recording process is done, I'm knee deep in dealing with the manufacturing of the new disc! Looking through photos, considering layout design and bringing the finished recording in for mastering, the process that puts the finishing touches on the collection of mixes at a whole. I'm on the schedule at Sony music in two weeks for this.....looking forward to it! I'm keeping the schedule clear of gigs so that I can focus on this...will be out again in another month or two...Looking forward to it, and to seeing all of you!

OK, for real.... - November 18, 2009

Well, all of the songs are recorded! Robert and I are in the final mixing phase. It's been a great year from a compositional standpoint. I began recording in December, starting with a list of 10 songs. All but two of the songs were tossed off of the list in favor of new songs, written after the recording process had begun. It's been a very fertile year; this is good! I hope to be ready for mastering in early December so the project can be sent out for design and duplication. Stay tuned, friends! Oh, and thanks for coming out to the gigs, it's always great to see friendly faces out there; I'm into your love!

I see the end! - September 8, 2009

Alright, I see ALMOST the end. 7 tracks done, 3 almost there - then off to the mastering place before duplicatioin. Oh, it's been a mighty long road it's been. Made better by all of your company at recent gigs! It's been a great summer, lots of new songs and new friends!

More Progress - July 31, 2009

Thanks all who have been turning out for the recent gigs. I so appreciate your appreciation and support! Many of you have asked for updates on the recording, so here is the progress report!

The rhythm tracks for the cd are now done thanks to some fine work on the part of Robert Bard and Mike Ralff on bass, Eric Parker on drums and Brian Mellick on percussion. It's been great fun to work with these talented and delightful guys! This week, we started layering on some colors and brought in Michael Snow to lay down violin tracks on several of the tunes: Stay, Keep the Light On and Forgot to Remember. Oh, how I love the violin!

Progress - June 15, 2009

Hey all, the CD is coming along! I've just enlisted the help of the wonderful Mike Ralff on bass and he and I have been hammering out the bottom end of the arrangements. We've been having some fun rocking out in the basement laBORatory!

Ahh Summer. That means a return to the lovely Mohonk for my campfire gigs. Love those!

Peace All

Recording Progress Update - March 23, 2009

Oh yes, the folkie in me and the jazzer in me have been wrestling a plenty with the song list for the new CD. I started with a pretty firm list of new-ish (all written fall 2008) songs, ready to record. But....... since the start of the recording in December and now, I've written a slew of new tunes and all but one of the original songs on the list have been replaced! Worse dilemmas one could face, this I know. It's all been a delicious adventure at any rate, though a slow process. Soon comes my spring break and I've blocked a few full studio days - so I hope to make some good progress. Stay tuned!!

Rosendale Cafe - March 11, 2009

Lovely house at the Rosendale Cafe last night, with wonderful performing songwriters on the bill. Oh, our lovely valley is chock full of good vibe nooks and crannies! or is that crooks and nannies?

Fun at the High Falls Cafe - January 23, 2009

A good time was had by all at the High Falls Cafe last night! It was the third year anniversary of the weekly music series run by Kurt Henry and Cheryl Lambert. Those two do a bang up job of bringing in a cool bunch of artists to play, and they do it week after week! I had a great time and debuted two new tunes, Keep the Light On and See Through. The frost outside did not keep listeners away, the place was packed. Good vibe indeed!

Ground Breaking! - December 18, 2008

I broke ground on the new cd project this week with Robert Bard in his Skytop Studio. Details to follow!

Rosendale Food Pantry Benefit - November 16, 2008

Thanks to Felicia Flanagan for organizing and Mary and Aaron for hosting this house concert to benefit the Rosendale food pantry. Great people, great food, great cause and great fun!

New CD? - October 27, 2008

It was great to see those of you that came to see me the High Falls Cafe last week. Kurt and Cheryl run such a nice scene over there, eh?

A good number of you asked about a recording of the new songs and the answer is yes, it's in the works! The tunes are written and I'm polishing the arrangements as you read this!

The production on REASON featured full band arrangements (see the music section) and I am hoping to capture a more live and unplugged sound for the new project (yet to be titled - ideas anyone?). Still, I'm thinking about other musicians I'd like to work with, not to mention where to record! Ah, decisions, decisions. But, it's all fun and I am thankful to have the mind, spirit and heart to dive into it all!

Details to follow, friends!
